A new Handbook of Nuclear Engineering is indeed a rare event, although the engineering sciences – and especially nuclear engineering – have progressed immensely during the fifty- two years that have passed since the publication of the first handbook of this kind. Even if the basic principles of nuclear engineering have remained unchanged for decades, it is com- pelling to note that the professional practice in this sector has enjoyed great progress during this period.
